AT WINTER RYE, WE BELIEVE IN THE IMPORTANCE OF MAKING OBJECTS AT HUMAN SPEED.

PATRICE MURTHA

A potter’s greatest pleasure, after working at the wheel, is knowing that someone will enjoy the results. Patrice has been working with clay for over twenty years with the user in mind. Her functional porcelainware is lightweight, yet remarkably strong and durable. Pottery is the foundation of the collaboration known as Winter Rye.

BARBARA KORBEL

Weaving by hand is about the passage of time. It takes hours to design a project and dress a loom and many more hours weaving the cloth with row upon row of yarn. Barbara’s textiles are made of natural fibers: cotton, wool, and linen and are woven on an eight harness floor loom. Her textiles complement the colors and designs of Winter Rye pottery.

UNION

Patrice and Barbara are the co-founders of Winter Rye. They are proudly based in Berwyn, Illinois and are committed to making their goods affordable while honoring the labor of the individual worker. The partners continue to explore materials and recently have added leather and wood products to their collections. They share a Chicago-style bungalow with an eccentric grey cat named Levon Ornette Little.
